Marc Jacobs Spring 2016 Collection Bags

In a collection that shut down New York Fashion Week with a dazzling bang, Marc Jacob reminded us once again that he never disappoints in the dramatics department. New York’s famed Ziegfeld Theatre set the scene for Marc’s trademark genius theatrics. This time he paid homage to American cinema, as well as Americana itself, and took the word “show” to full-blown proportions with a lengthy red carpet, cigarette girls, classic candy, and popcorn. The highly entertaining collection also seems to pay homage to the prolific work of the designer himself. With a retrospective mood, we were offered a helping of the best of Marc Jacobs all at once, including elements of old-school grunge, à la his early Perry Ellis era; sassy ’40s Hollywood-era glamour; shrunken military suits and varsity jackets; glam-rock platforms fit for Ziggy Stardust; sweeping dresses with high-shine luster, fit for other red carpets to come; and, of course, plenty of irreverence, from stars-and-stripes motifs to wacky screen prints.

It also marked the first time he combined the showing of little-sister label Marc by Marc with the main collection, and the result was a high-low mix that encourages us to counter our pricy bag with more accessibly-priced shoes. Speaking of bags, it also heralded what just might be the most excessive yet insanely fun bag collection I have ever seen from Marc Jacobs (and I’ve been a huge MJ whore since college!). The crossbodies and clutches snapped, crackled, and popped with as much pizazz as the twinkling red, white, and blue separates, but if anything, Marc is a man of intelligent dichotomy, and the “bones” of the bags remain as classic as they come. Crisp, clean lines, which could be likened to that of a beautifully constructed home, laid the ideal foundation for pieces to be adorned with sequins, charms, and patches galore.

Marigold-yellow python paired with Mickey Mouse and the Statue of Liberty? It somehow works flawlessly! So do kitschy pin adornments that bring to mind digging through Grandma’s old jewel box, while a traditionally structured rectangular shoulder bag gets outfitted in marching band-style piping and trim, and an elongated clutch receives the American flag treatment in sparkly sequins. Rather than buying stickers that could ultimately ruin the bag, Marc has done the work of accessorizing your accessory for you. His message is clear: More is more is more! And really, is there anything more richly American than excessive amounts of excess?

Flashy Style Trends: Neon Vs Animal Prints

Categories:Other Brands

Neon and animal prints are two huge trends that have been occupying my attention all week. Marc Jacobs, LV, Balenciaga, Jimmy Choo, YSL, D&G…you name it. They`re all doing neon and leopard – sometimes both on the same bag! Both are bold, bright, and seem wrong in that conservative dressing part of your brain. Don`t fear the risks! Here`s how to indulge the trend without losing sight of your own personal style.

Indulge, But Don`t Overdo It

The neon and animal print trends for this year (reoccurring and morphing since the start of this 80`s revival in 2009) are bigger than just handbags. They`ve spilled over into all accessories and clothes. So, step one is choose your weapon! Just as you should calm a neon skirt or pant with a neutral shirt, if you`re going to go with a neon bag, let it be the color focus. Do not overdo it. The same goes for animal prints. The best advice for both is to start small. So like, start with a single electric pink purse and work your way up to the beaming disco princess outfit of your fantasies.

Replica Handbags – Go Neon Over Animal Print

I buy almost exclusively replica handbags, as you may know. I swear by them. One thing I`ve found is an unfortunate low quality in animal print styles in general when it comes to replica. Avoid them. If it`s meant to be real animal fur or leopard skin it never is, and even synthetic designs come out poorly in replica. My advice is go with neon! Personally, I way prefer this trend anyway. Not only is it more interesting, fun, and original, it`s also been done way better by the big designers, and, you can skip the weird feeling of wearing an endangered leopard`s fur. Neon is the hotter trend for the coming spring.

My Favorite Neon Styles

I think Marc Jacobs is ultimately the man behind this neon rebirth, so I tend to prefer his styles both his own (like the amazing Lovebird Tote below), and the Louis Vuitton. I`ve always loved the LV graffiti from 2009 that Jacobs did with Stephen Sprouse. If you thought it was going out of style, think again! Jimmy Choo has mastered the neon revival, and even coupled it with a leopard print – gorgeous! Finally, I love the pinks and lime greens that Balenciaga has been working into leather bags lately.

Marc by Marc Jacobs Takes a Step Toward Handbag Sophistication

Categories:Other Brands

Marc by Marc Jacobs Get a Grip Large Satchel

Marc Jacobs himself has acknowledged that his little-sister Marc by Marc Jacobs line has fallen off a bit over the past few years. To remedy the situation, he appointed some well-known new design brass to the label – Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier – back in May, and although we won’t see any results from the new leadership until the brand’s Spring 2014 collection debuts next week, the Marc by Marc Jacobs Get A Grip Large Satchel is a pretty good indicator of where Jacobs would like to see the brand headed.

When I first saw this bag in the New Arrivals lineup at NeimanMarcus.com alongside bags from Rochas and The Row, it didn’t look at all out of place. Black leather, simple shape, inventive use of sleek, subtle hardware – it’s all here, and for a price that isn’t nearly so astronomical as the look will run you at any number of other brands. It’s a strong basic, a bag that you can take to the office without fear of looking unprofessional but that you might also like enough to carry off-duty. (If models can be “off-duty,” I suspect that we’re all allowed to use that distinction for our down time.)

At $598, the bag is on the more expensive end of the spectrum for a Marc by Marc bag, but it also lacks many of the slightly juvenile details that made earlier bags from the brand a prime choice for coeds and interns. Jacobs’ little sister appears to be ready to grow up a little bit, and not a moment too soon.
